The village hall in Marton used to be rather basic with no particular features or facilities. The rural location of the site meant that it was important to have a good community facility, to bring residents together for a variety of purposes and events.
Finance was gained through a combination of The National Lottery Community Buildings Funding, the local council and community fundraising, with enough raised to build a completely new hall, with an array of features and facilities for a wide range of individuals, groups and societies to use.
The new Marton Village Hall is now a light airy space with modern facilities and is a very important and much used community facility. The hall itself has a large window to the side, which allows daylight to flood the building and with a high ceiling, the room is beautifully spacious.
One end of the hall houses the stage; Q-build portable staging from Stage Systems. Involved throughout the development, Stage Systems offered advice on the best options and layout for the performance equipment and suggested Q-build as it can be formatted as a flat platform stage, or multi-height and stands in front of two doors that lead to the back stage area. The stage stores away onto the storage trolley and then stored in this back stage room.
Stage Systems’ stage lighting and speakers are wall mounted on the side walls and are positioned to highlight performers and add volume through the microphones at any performance. Fully automated from the portable control panel (housing the amp and mixer) at the back of the hall, further lighting and speakers are positioned around the room and are independently controlled, as the room is also used for discos and parties, allowing for fully controlled sound and light around the entire space. In addition an intercom system allows for dialogue between back stage and controls during performances.
Front of house curtains run on a track around the stage, plus at the rear of the stage is another curtain track that can hold additional curtains or backdrops.
The hall is also used for a variety of purposes including table top sales, fundraising events and functions, bowls, exercise classes, yoga and badminton. In fact there is a full badminton court marked out on the floor of the hall, and the design of the stage accommodates this, so when the stage is stored away, the full badminton court is revealed.
Events including live bands and performances, drama productions from local groups (such as the young farmers) as well as the local school performances are seen regularly in the new hall. The variety of uses illustrates the versatility and facilities of the hall, as well as the significance it holds to the community in having such a great local resource.
The transformation of the hall is thanks to the collective local funding combined with the building’s design and the quality of products and facilities installed. The hall is integral to the community now: a central location, but more importantly it brings the community together for a wide variety of enjoyable and inspirational activities and events.
