Improved drama studio with Q-plus
Desford village in Leicestershire may not be the location that springs to mind when booking a theatrical night out, but thanks to Bosworth Community College, it's now on the performance circuit.
The college is home to over 1,300 students aged between 14 and 19, specialises in sport and has close links with the community. A recent upgrade of their drama studio set off the search for a tiered seating structure, which would accommodate an audience as well as a split level platform for teaching and performing during drama lessons.
The search presented the college with an ideal solution in the form of Q-Plus from Stage Systems, a local Leicestershire based company, which manufactures and supplies an array of staging and tiering solutions. Q-Plus is designed to easily reconfigure in flat or tiered formats and is capable of being stored away simply and compactly. In the case of Bosworth, the structure, made even more versatile through choosing a carpeted option, is nearly always built up, merely due to its constant use. Drama is taught to GCSE level and theatre studies to A-level, offering the students a broad understanding of performance skills, developing confidence, technique and expression. The small space creates an intimate atmosphere where talent can evolve in familiar and comfortable surroundings, and the professional equipment adds to the extra element to inspire expert performances.
The drama studio is an incredible place to perform. With a wonderful high ceiling, professional lighting and sound facilities plus comprehensive tiered staging, the space has been transformed from a simple drama studio into a mini theatre. Used in many ways, the space has great versatility. Clearly the students within the college use the space for classes, but the college can and have expanded the use further by bringing the excitement of the professionals of stage and screen to the venue. Theatrical shows have been performed to an audience of students as part of their studies, which make up an important part of the course, actually seeing a variety of productions. The studio has also been used as a cinema and a stand up comedy venue, which the students, community and college have benefited from, through being united, entertained and financially rewarded. The events have been very popular and the funds raised are channelled back into the college, events that are proposed to be repeated due to such a popular response.
The upgrade of the drama studio has meant more than just a nice new room, it has given the college, students and the community a great new opportunity.
