Client: The Expanding Horizons Project

The brief:

A scheme for Scottish schools has given children in Fife and their surrounding communities, nine new schools on eight sites. In a combination of replacements, developments and completely new sites, these primary schools have been given a brand new lease of life. The Expanding Horizons Project in Fife, has seen replacement schools at five sites and completely new developments at three.

Miller Construction was involved in all the construction work in a development valuing £63 million as part of Public Private Partnership (PPP) to completely rebuild and refit the schools and Fife based ESA McIntosh fitted the interiors of the schools with a selection of fixed furniture. Each new building has a modern, contemporary flavour with the very best in facilities offering new accessible amenities to the local school children and the surrounding community.

All the schools have been built with the community in mind. The larger sites incorporate a variety of community services to include libraries and crèche facilities and in particular the Duloch School has a sports hall, multi-purpose halls, drama studio and theatre, community library and a learning centre.  The facilities also include an ASN (Additional Support Needs) School on the same site which incorporates the latest equipment specific to ASN, including a hydrotherapy pool and light stimulation rooms.

Each development has community amenities, including community lounges and staging facilities. With the vision to bring the community and schools closer together, opening the offering of facilities to everyone in the local area seemed to be the clear choice. The choice in what to offer is however crucial.

The end result:

What brings a community closer together? Social gatherings, community occasions, shows, events and a feeling of belonging. At every school in the project there is a community room for such events not to mention a demountable stage that can be reconfigured in a variety of formats and stored away compactly. In every case the staging chosen was Q-Build from Stage Systems, for its flexibility, ease of use, quality, strength and storage solutions.

What they said:

The individual schools, now all complete, have all chosen the best products and facilities to meet the needs of their pupils, teachers and local community. It is true to say that this project has given Fife school children, teachers and residents the potential to expand their own horizons.
